Use tools to Improve Your Writing

By Marlene Kaiser

Use a Grammar Checker when Writing your Intels.

I have been reading and screening some intels. I really enjoyed reading most of them, and learned from them. My main criticism is that they could improve their grammar. I’m not sure if the intels I read were written by native American English speakers, or if they were translated from another language. I finally assumed that many were non native English speaking.

If you are a native English-speaking person, the best way to improve your writing style is to simply read it out loud after you have completed the typing. This helps to see where you could improve. If you are a non native speaker, it is essential that you use a grammar checker if you want to make the best impressions.

Whether you are a native speaker, or are translating your intel, you can improve them by using a grammar checker. Regular use of a grammar checker will help to bring your English grammar up to par. It still wouldn’t be perfect, but it will go a long way to making your writing more readable. Good grammar helps your writing flow. I personally use Word Perfect’s grammar checker, Spell checker, and Thesaurus. I started using it in the early 80's and I have remained loyal. I’ve tried Microsoft Word, but it doesn’t have all of the features that Word Perfect has.

There are a number of programs available to purchase on the internet that teach English grammar and punctuation through analyzing writing. One program with which I’m familiar is called White Smoke. They provide suggestions through emails. I’ve found them extremely helpful. These suggestions don’t depend on buying the program. Signing up with your email address will do. They do have a web grammar checker but it only corrects 250 characters at a time, making it virtually useless. If you want to learn how to write great English, I would highly recommend this program.

Another way many writers could improve their intels is to use the Thesaurus on their word processor. Using a Thesaurus, clears up information by providing a more appropriate word than the writer might get from off the top of their head. It also improves variety.

Vary the length of your sentences. We have become so efficient in our written English that short sentences are much preferred, and those long sentences, loaded with adjectives like Dickens used, have lost their interest. We are so visual now that words no longer make the pictures for us. We have access to so many more ways to get the pictures.

Yet, authors who can form sentences that make great word pictures are still prized for their writing and sought out. I wish I could paint great pictures with my words. That’s a real talent. I’m trying, but it escapes me.

Contributor's Note

I no longer get to spend my time in a classroom full of high school sophomores who think they know all they need to know because they speak English. I miss it. The challenge was to make English interesting enough that they stayed awake and took some of the information with them. Years after I taught, one of my students thanked me. He said "that he didn't think he learned anything in my class, until he went to college, and could express himself well in both written and spoken English". I consider this one of the greatest compliments I've ever received. It somehow meant my first year of teaching was a success. I left the school many days that year feeling like a total failure.

Thank you for sharing this valuable information, Marlene.
I still am trying to learn how to use the tools available on the internet. Trying to do too much, too fast is something that we can all get caught up in. Staying the course is difficult, but best.
Keep up the good work, we can all benefit from an english teacher.
Best to you.
